The Importance Of Wearing Mask To Curtail The Spread Of Covid-19 September 21, 2020 18:17
Covid-19 has impacted every life on the planet. Most of us have to make extreme lifestyle changes, such as staying at home, avoiding massive gathering, and maintaining social distancing. Changing old behaviours and adopting new habits has become crucial to staying safe. Chief among these is wearing a face mask in public.
According to experts, face masks protect against several respiratory infectious diseases that are carried in tiny droplets of moisture, including Covid-19 and the common flu.
Furthermore, they explained that viruses, like SARS-CoV-2, are primarily spread by an infected person through the air by coughing and sneezing. The virus can also be spread by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes.
A face mask prevents droplets containing the viruses from entering the air and contaminating surfaces, therefore, curbing the spread of the diseases.
Masks or other types of face coverings are therefore critical to prevent an infected person from transmitting diseases to others while providing those who have not been infected with a degree of protection against infection.
There are many available face masks for sale online. Bulk buying of face masks is very common nowadays especially to retailers and those who see how essential these protective face coverings are. Some people look for branded face masks while others prefer custom reusable face masks.
It is also important to take into consideration that 40% of people who are infected with Covid-19 are asymptomatic and are therefore unaware that they carry the virus and can infect others. Widespread screening is largely unavailable and often ineffective at identifying infected persons who are asymptomatic and silently spreading Coronavirus disease. You may unknowingly have passed by an infected person in busy areas like business or commercial establishments. Therefore, it is imperative to wear masks when going out.
Shane Perry, the business advisor from Max Funding says, “Universal mask-wearing can reduce the transmission of the virus not only to the business community significantly, especially from sources that are unknowingly spreading the disease to others. Even forecast models suggest that the use of masks by the majority of a population, combined with other safety precautions, may result in large reductions in cases of infections and fatalities.”
Who Should Be Wearing A Mask?
1. The General Public
The CDC (Centers For Disease Control And Prevention), is recommending that every person over the age of 2 years wears a mask in public or when in proximity to people who do not belong to the same household. This is especially important where social distancing is not possible.
2. Infected People Or Those Who Believe They Are Infected
If you have tested positive with Covid-19, are showing symptoms, or simply think that you may have the virus, avoid public areas and stay at home - except to receive medical care. Stay in the same room as much as possible and avoid other people as well as pets. Wear a mask in your home if this cannot be avoided. Remember that wearing a mask protects others from infection by containing droplets expelled through respiration, coughing and sneezing and prevents the droplets from coming into contact with surfaces and other people.
Anyone caring for a person that has Covid-19 in their home or a non-healthcare setting should wear a mask. However, it should be noted that the effectiveness of the protection that a mask provides healthy caregivers to prevent them from inhaling the virus are still unknown. Other measures such as limiting contact, disinfecting surfaces, and proper hand washing are essential.
Wearing a mask isn't meant to limit our freedom but rather to provide us with greater freedom by reducing the risk of disease transmission, particularly Covid-19 at this moment. The ability to attend school, go to work and socialise to some extent without the fear of infection is possible when wearing a face mask.
As Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Board Chair of Gavi, stated - no one will be safe until every person is safe and that the time to act is now and the way to act is together.
